The CMI Lex Maritima – The Gothenburg Draft

02 January, 2025, 15:43

During the CMI Colloquium 2024 in Gothenburg, Sweden, the International Working Group (IWG) on the subject presented the CMI Lex Maritima – the Gothenburg Draft (the Draft).

UMBA, along with other national maritime law associations, was invited to provide comments on the Draft and the updated Questionnaire. A Group of UMBA members worked collaboratively on the request, sharing Ukrainian maritime law specifics and practice.

The Draft articulates the universally applicable basic principles of maritime law, focusing on the common core where there is at least a rough global consensus. By presenting these principles in clear and simple terms, the CMI Lex Maritima aims to enhance the understanding of maritime law within legal practitioners and the industry.

This instrument serves as a valuable tool in education, legal interpretation, the drafting of national rules and case law. The ultimate goal of the CMI Lex Maritima is to significantly contribute to the international uniformity of maritime law.

The IWG's ambitious plan is to finalize the Draft for presentation in Tokyo in 2025.

UMBA is grateful to all members of the Association who contributed to this work and supported the CMI in achieving this shared objective.
